Introductions Trongsa, central Bhutan

Trongsa Dzong has a rich and significant history dating back to 1543 when a temple and meditation room were built by Lam Ngagi Wangchuk, who mediated in Willing village next to Willing Resort. Later lama Ngawang Namgyal from Tibet known for unifying Bhutan, constructed the first dzong to replace the original structure and named it Chökhor Rabtentse Dzong, now known as Trongsa Dzong. Its strategic central location was crucial for controlling trade and power between eastern and western Bhutan.

His Majesty Ugyen Wangchuck, (11 June 1862 – 26 August 1926), was the first Druk Gyalpo (King) of Bhutan, reigning from 1907 to 1926. Trongsa as the base of administrative head quarters, 1st king made significant efforts to unite the country from Trongsa and earn the trust of the Bhutanese people. In 1907, Ugyen Wangchuck was elected as the first hereditary King of Bhutan, marking the beginning of the Wangchuck dynasty and a new era in the nation's history.

Since then, the Governors of the Trongsa region were historically elected as Dragon Kings of Bhutan. This tradition continues today, as the prince must serve as the governor (Trongsa Penlop) of Trongsa before being crowned King of Bhutan. Trongsa also served as the winter residence for royals during the regin of 1st and 2nd king of Bhutan until mid 1950s.

Historically, the road connecting eastern and western Bhutan passed through Trongsa Dzong's courtyard. The massive doors of the dzong could be shut on the Penlop’s (Governor’s) command, effectively dividing the country and allowing the governor to control trade and collect larger tax revenues.

Currently, Trongsa Dzong serves dual purposes: it functions as a monastery and as an administrative office for the Trongsa region. The dzong houses over 300 monks, maintaining its religious significance while also fulfilling administrative roles for the local government. This blend of spiritual and governmental functions highlights the dzong's continuing importance in Bhutanese society.
